The AuDHD Holiday Dilemma: Balancing Routine, Novelty, and Family Dynamics

As we head into the school holidays, let’s discuss the delightful yet daunting task of planning a holiday!  This is a challenge for anyone, but for AuDHDers (a combination of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder), it presents a unique set of challenges. The need for routine and predictability clashes with the craving for novelty and stimulation, making it difficult to find and enjoy the perfect holiday. Add in the dynamics of managing a family and kids, and the task can feel overwhelming. Add into the mix neurodivergent kids, who, let’s face it, are likely reality, and it almost becomes too much even to consider doing.

The AuDHD Holiday Dilemma- Balancing Routine, Novelty, and Family Dynamics

But that’s not fun!  So, in this blog, we offer practical tips to help make holiday planning a more enjoyable experience.

Choose a Flexible Destination

Look for destinations that offer a mix of routine and novelty. Resorts or holiday parks with structured activities and flexible schedules can provide the best of both worlds. These places often have a variety of activities to choose from, allowing you to stick to a routine while also exploring new experiences.

Create a Balanced Itinerary

Plan a balanced itinerary that includes both structured activities and free time. This allows you to have a predictable schedule while also leaving room for spontaneous adventures. Make sure to include downtime to relax and recharge, especially if you or your family members are prone to sensory overload.

Prepare for Sensory Needs

Pack sensory-friendly items such as noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, and comfort items to help manage sensory sensitivities. Being prepared can significantly affect how enjoyable and stress-free your holiday is.

Set Realistic Expectations

Set realistic expectations for yourself and your family, and be prepared to adapt if things don't go as expected. The goal is to enjoy the holiday and create positive memories.  It's okay if everything doesn't go according to plan

As a neuro-affirming psychologist, I believe in advocating for all neurotypes and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy enriching experiences. Despite their potential for stress, holidays offer invaluable opportunities for bonding, relaxation, and personal growth. By embracing the unique needs and strengths of each family member, we can create memorable and fulfilling holiday experiences that cater to everyone.

Remember, the goal is not perfection but connection and joy. So, take the plunge, plan that holiday, and cherish the moments of adventure and togetherness, knowing that every experience, even the chaotic ones, contributes to the rich tapestry of family life.
