My A to Z: A: Avoidance of pain and attraction to reward is a human condition.

That's what I think anyway. Is my onion in line with with the experts? The human condition is defined as the positive or negative aspects of being human, such as birth, growth, reproduction, love, and death.

So in some ways yes but I added that we seek pleasure and avoid pain not just survive in a dichotomy. And to some extent that’s true although not to be confused with the achievement of happiness. Avoiding pain almost always means you lose out on the potency of the pleasure too.

For example, socially anxious - don’t go out - avoid social awkwardness - but also miss out on the fun, the laughter, the rewards of BEING socially connected! So we cannot live without pain but we do seek to minimise it.

So you decide to be active on Instagram instead of going to the party. Sure, you feel somewhat connected but also isolated from the real experience. Both pleasure and pain are diluted.

How long can you operate in this state, insulated from great pain but also great pleasure?
